Back of the Box:
Ronnie (Paul DeAngelo), now a co-owner of a
new Camp becomes very suspicious when kids and camp staff
begin falling victims to gruesome "accidents" again. Ronnie
can't seem to shake what happened 20 years ago at Camp
Arawak and with good reason. So as he deals with his
paranoia, a large cast of kids and camp staff run amuck
doing all the things they can get away with when there is no
supervision around and everyone gets wrapped up in the
murders.
Review:
Wow. I didn't think we'd ever get to see
another sleepaway camp movie, unless it was a remake of the
original or something of that nature. This film finally gets
released 25 years after the original was released. It also
appears that this movie completely disregards the other two
sequels that were made. Sleepaway Camp 2: Unhappy Campers &
Sleepaway Camp 3: Teenage Wasteland. Either way, we now have
a new sequel to check out, so let's get to it.
First off, let's look at the people you may
remember from the other Sleepaway Camp movies, or someone
you've probably seen before. Firstly, we have Isaac Hayes.
Ironically, he plays a Chef in this film. Yes, just like his
character on South Park. Next, we have Felissa Rose. I don't
think she needs any introduction, but she played Angela in
the very first Sleepaway Camp movie. If you forgot about
her, I feel bad for you. Next we have Jonathan Tiersten, who
played the character of Ricky in the first Sleepaway Camp
film. Also, we see Paul DeAngelo who plays a decent part in
this film. Man, this guy is a tank, and he looks exactly the
same as he did in the original Sleepaway Camp. It's nice to
see these people together again. Oh, and let's not forget
that this film has the original director/writer who did the
first Sleepaway Camp film, Robert Hiltzik.
The camp in this film, which is now called
Camp Manabe, isn't very different from the camps in the
other films. We have snobby teenage girls, pranksters, sex
fiends, drug abusers, etc... We also get introduced to an
outcast. The movie focuses mostly on a teenage boy named
Alan. This kid seems to be a bit troubled. First off, this
kid acts if he is a bit immature. He likes to mess with
people, but on the other hand, he doesn't like it when
people start to mess with him back. Unfortunately for him,
eventually he turns into a victim. At first, he seems like
he could be a bully, or just a loud mouth who likes to mess
with people. However, things begin to change. Eventually
people start messing with the kid hardcore, until he is an
outright victim.
This movie can be a bit confusing at times.
There were at least two camp counselors that were very hard
to identify as counselors. One of the counselors acted just
like the kids in the film, and heckled Alan as well, which
was very weird. Also, I'm not even sure if this other person
was a camp counselor, but I think she was supposed to be.
She was nice to Alan, unlike most people. I don't know,
maybe they should have made these characters wear their Camp
Manabe t-shirts? It could have at least helped in
determining who is who.
Even though this movie had a great 80's feel
to it, it just didn't cut it for me. The acting was terrible
and most of the effects were terrible as well. Particularly
when they try to pull off some CGI fire. There wasn't very
much detail put into the movie, it seemed like they just
went out and tried to figure out the easiest way to do
something, without making it look good at all. It just seems
like there was a complete lack of effort. However, there
were some pretty clever death scenes which I didn't see
coming. I didn't expect they would put that much thought
into something. They did, and I really enjoyed how clever
some of them were. Also, the movie just seemed to rush into
the ending. It looked like they were going to start
developing the ending of the movie, and then all of a sudden
the ending just happened. They just jumped right into the
end. I don't know, seemed a bit weird to me.
It was definitely nice to see these
characters in another Sleepaway Camp movie. I liked seeing
them all together again, unfortunately it just wasn't pulled
off very well. The movie looked really low budget, and it
just seemed like there was a lack of effort. The acting was
horrible, which also didn't help out the annoying characters
that were in this film. It's too bad, I like the Sleepaway
Camp films, and was hoping that this one was going to be a
good one. Unfortunately for me, it wasn't. I would rate
Return to Sleepaway Camp a 4 out of 10.
